Everyone, once again, I hope you’re staying warm this weekend.

A few troop 682 announcements are noted below.

1. FEBRUARY 1 COURT OF HONOR. We’ll have our winter court of honor on Tuesday (February 1) from 7:00 – 8:30 pm at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church (43987 John Mosby Highway).

As a reminder, during a COURT OF HONOR, we formally RECOGNIZE scouts who have earned merit badges and awards, or advanced to any rank (except Eagle), since the last court of honor. The court of honor is a PUBLIC recognition and FAMILY and FRIENDS are welcome.

Because PVUMC is renovating areas of the church, we may hold the court of honor in the chapel (not the sanctuary) or the fellowship hall. Scouts will direct everyone to the court of honor location. IMPORTANTLY, please wear a MASK during the court of honor.

As the SERVICE patrol, the PENGUIN patrol will set up before, and clean up after, the court of honor. PENGUIN patrol members should ARRIVE by 6:30 pm.

2. SCOUT OATH, LAW, SLOGAN, AND MOTTO. As a reminder, during a BOARD OF REVIEW, scouts must RECITE (from memory) the scout oath, law, slogan, and motto. Assistant scoutmasters, when you have a scoutmaster conference (particularly for the lower ranks), please ask the scout to recite the scout oath, law, slogan, and motto.

3. FEBRUARY 5-6 BATTLESHIP TRIP. We’ll visit and stay overnight on the Battleship Wisconsin in Norfolk, Virginia February 5-6. IMPORTANTLY, the meeting/departure time has CHANGED to 10:00 am. We’ll meet at PVUMC at 10:00 am and leave as soon as possible. Scouts, please bring lunch (and dinner) money. Additional information and forms will be sent to registrants later this week.

4. FEBRUARY 5 PVUMC FELLOWSHIP HALL RENOVATION MOVE. As we’ve noted, PVUMC will renovate its fellowship hall (where we meet). During the renovation, we’ll meet in the PVUMC chapel (not the sanctuary) or a location other than PVUMC. On Saturday, February 5, PVUMC and troop items will be moved from the fellowship hall to a storage unit. The troop must move its two file cabinets and other items. PVUMC needs assistance moving its items to the storage unit. If you are not attending the battleship trip, then please ASSIST the troop and PVUMC move items. The time a scout assists with moving PVUMC items counts as SERVICE time. Please meet at PVUMC at 10:00 am on February 5. LUNCH will be provided.

5. FEBRUARY 7 PLC MEETING. The patrol leaders council will meet virtually on Monday, February 7, at 7:00 pm. Other than assistant patrol leaders, all youth elected and appointed leaders are expected to attend. 6. FEBRUARY 8 SCOUTBOOK PHOTOGRAPHS. As explained previously, we’re photographing individual scouts and adult leaders in their class A uniforms, and posting the photographs to each individual’s Scoutbook profile. Troop historian Gavin Holland and Mr. Uptgraft are leading the effort. If a scout or parent prefers NOT to post the scout’s photograph to his Scoutbook profile, then that’s fine and please NOTIFY me. Photographs will be taken again during the FEBRUARY 8 troop meeting.

7. NORTHERN TIER 2023. As noted previously, we’ve reserved a Northern Tier 7-night trek for July 1 – 8, 2023. We’ve also reserved a 10-night trek for July 16 – 26, 2023. Both treks are full. We’re trying to fill a second 7-night trek. If you are interested in a 7-night trek, then please inform Mr. Martin (scouter.bdm@gmail.com) or me as soon as possible, or register at https://forms.gle/DtW4XRYxrPQGBRhJ8. If you want to be on the 10-night trek waiting list, then please inform Mr. Martin. As a reminder, Northern Tier 2023 is open to anyone currently in at least the 7th grade and classified as a BSA “swimmer.”

8. SUMMIT 2023. As also noted previously, we plan to reserve the “Summit Experience” at the BSA Summit Bechtel Reserve for June 17 – 23, 2023. If you are interested, then please register at https://forms.gle/Z3T8EpmwePuJnBdr5.

9. FEBRUARY 20 SCOUT SUNDAY. While the troop calendar notes February 13 as Scout Sunday, PVUMC and our troop will celebrate Scout Sunday on February 20. We’ll express our appreciation to PVUMC for chartering the troop and permitting us to use its facilities. Each scout is INVITED to attend the church service Sunday morning (in class A uniform). If you are an elected or appointed youth leader, and unless you have a religious objection, a schedule conflict, or an undue family burden, you are EXPECTED to attend the church service (in class A uniform). Additional information will be provided later.

10. MARCH 11-13 SHOOTING CAMPOUT. As noted previously, the shooting campout is March 11 – 13 at Camp Rock Enon (20 minute drive west of Winchester, Virginia). We’ll enjoy .22 caliber rifle shooting and archery. Registration and other information is available at https://forms.gle/rbmmPifJKQdfNxDj7. The registration deadline is March 8.

Everyone, other than sleeping difficulty and cold weather, we enjoyed the Battleship Wisconsin trip.

And, thank you to the scouts and adults who, despite the cold weather, assisted with the PVUMC fellowship hall renovation move Saturday morning.

1. FEBRUARY 8 MEETING – NEW LOCATION AND PATROL FOCUS. We’ll meet on Tuesday (February 8) from 7:00 – 8:30 pm. IMPORTANTLY, because of the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church fellowship hall RENOVATION, we’ll MEET at the HAMPTON INN DULLES SOUTH (4050 Westfax Drive, Chantilly, Virginia). It is located approximately 1.7 miles east of PVUMC on Highway 50 (Lee Jackson Memorial Highway). The Hampton Inn is graciously donating use of its meeting room. Scouts, please BEHAVE appropriately and TREAT the hotel, its employees, and its guests considerately.

During the February 8 meeting, we’ll continue our focus on PATROLS. In particular, patrols will work on their patrol flags.

For the February 8 meeting: (1) the PENGUIN patrol will set up and open; (2) Sid and I will give ANNOUNCEMENTS; (3) each patrol will meet, take attendance, and sign-off requirements; (4) the ORCA patrol will address and lead the PATROLS in patrol activities; (5) the PENGUIN patrol will plan and lead a game; and (6) the PENGUIN patrol will close and clean up.

As noted below, we’ll also take photographs of individuals in their class A uniforms.

2. ASM NEW MEMBER COORDINATOR. Assistant scoutmasters, we desperately need an ASM to serve as the adult new member coordinator. Ted Ballowe previously served in that position. The coordinator guides and assists the troop guides in welcoming new scouts and assisting in their scout development and advancement during their first six-months. The coordinator also communicates with new scout parents, and assists with youth and parents interested in joining troop 682.

3. BADGES, RANKS, AND AWARDS. If a scout expected to receive, but did not receive, a merit badge, rank advancement, or special award during the court of honor last week, then please speak with your patrol leader.

4. FRIENDS OF SCOUTING. As noted in the January 30 email from Mr. Merritt, the Friends of Scouting program is accepting donations to help with operating the BSA National Capital Area Council (which is our council), its camps (like Goshen Scout Reservation and Camp Snyder), and its programs. Donations are tax deductible. Donations can be made by: (1) giving Mr. Merritt cash or a check (made payable to Friends of Scouting); (2) mailing a check to the National Capital Area Council (9190 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, Maryland, 20814-3897, Attention: FoS); or (3) donating online at https://donations.scouting.org/#/council/082/appeal/4868 (please designate the Sully District and Troop 682, and inform Mr. Merritt).

We’ll also take PHOTOGRAPHS of individuals in their class A uniforms.

2. FEBRUARY 20 SCOUT SUNDAY. PVUMC and our troop will celebrate Scout Sunday on Sunday (February 20). Scouts will PRESENT the COLORS and I’ll say a few words. Each scout is INVITED to attend the church service (in class A uniform). If you are a youth leader, and unless you have a religious objection, a schedule conflict, or an undue family burden, you are EXPECTED to attend the church service (in class A uniform). The service begins at 11:00 am, but scouts should arrive by 10:45 am. Family members are welcome to attend with their scout.

3. SCOUT PARTICIPATION IN POLITICAL EVENTS. As a reminder, under Boy Scouts of America “longstanding policy,” uniformed scouts and adults may not actively participate in political events. While they may participate in flag ceremonies and lead the pledge of allegiance, they should retire after the ceremony or pledge and not remain in a “conspicuous location” where their presences could be construed as an endorsement or symbol of support. In addition, photographs of candidates or scouts in uniform or with BSA marks or logos are prohibited in political campaign materials. 4. NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING. National Youth Leadership Training is a 6-day program designed for scouts to learn leadership skills. To be eligible for NYLT, a scout must have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops, earned First Class rank, be at least 13 years of age, and receive approval from me. NYLT is a tremendous opportunity. Additional information is available in the attached flyer and at https://www.ncacbsa.org/national-youth-leadership-training/.

7. COPY ADULT WITH EMAIL. Scouts, when you email an adult, please remember to copy a parent or other trusted adult.

2. MARCH 22 DEADLINE – RELIGIOUS EMBLEM PROGRAM. As noted in the March 6 email from me, troop 682 will have a religious emblem program. Beginning Tuesday, April 5, Messrs. Chavez and Levi, and Mrs. Thompson, will lead the “God and Church” program for protestant Christians. Scouts completing the program will receive a “God and Church” medallion and Scouts BSA Youth Religious Award knot. The program is geared toward scouts in grades 6 – 8, but older scouts may participate.

The program will meet during certain (not all) troop 682 meetings in April, May, and potentially early June. The program cost is $25 per scout. Please REGISTER by emailing me at tyrus.thompson@nreca.coop. The DEADLINE to register is Tuesday, MARCH 22. If anyone wants to lead a DIFFERENT religious emblem program, then that would be great (please contact me).

3. JULY 10 – 16 SUMMER CAMP REGISTRATION. Troop 682 will attend Camp Marriott at Goshen Scout Reservation July 10 – 16. Scout summer camp is a great opportunity to earn merit badges, fellowship with other scouts, and enjoy various activities. Among other things, Camp Marriott has an extensive aquatics program including sailing, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, and the water sports merit badge. Camp Marriott also offers the New Scout Quest program for scouts who recently crossed over from Cub Scouts, or recently joined scouting. NSQ participants earn a variety of rank advancement requirements and have opportunities to pursue up to three merit badges.

4. MARCH 5 NYLT SUMMER REGISTRATION OPENED. National Youth Leadership Training summer registration opened March 5. You may register at https://www.ncacbsa.org/national-youth-leadership-training/. Slots are expected to fill quickly. As noted previously, NYLT is a 6-day program designed for scouts to learn leadership skills. To be eligible for NYLT, a scout must have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops, earned First Class rank, be at least 13 years of age, and receive approval from me. 5. ORDER OF THE ARROW ELECTION. While the troop calendar indicates that the ORDER OF THE ARROW ELECTION would be held during the March 1 troop meeting, the election has been DELAYED. We will forward the new election date and other information later.

6. MEETING AT PVUMC. We hope to resume meeting at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church by Tuesday, April 5. If the PVUMC renovations are not complete by that date, then we’ll meet outside.

The dates are July 28 – August 3, 2022. To attend, a scout must be at least 13 years old by July 28. Our troop may send a crew to the Summit Experience next summer (2023). But, a scout is welcome to attend both summers.

4. MARCH 25-27 BACKPACKING TRIPS. As noted previously, we’ll have two backpacking trips. One trip is for “older” scouts (currently in 7th grade or above and previous backpacking experience). It will be Friday – Sunday, March 25 – 27. The other trip is for “younger” scouts (any age or no previous backpacking experience). It will be Saturday – Sunday, March 26 – 27. 5. SCOUT PARTICIPATION IN POLITICAL EVENTS. As a reminder, under Boy Scouts of America “longstanding policy,” uniformed scouts and adults may not actively participate in political events. While they may participate in flag ceremonies and lead the pledge of allegiance, they should retire after the ceremony or pledge and not remain in a “conspicuous location” where their presences could be construed as an endorsement or symbol of support. In addition, photographs of candidates or scouts in uniform or with BSA marks or logos are prohibited in political campaign materials. 6. NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING. National Youth Leadership Training is a 6-day program designed for scouts to learn leadership skills. To be eligible for NYLT, a scout must have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops, earned First Class rank, be at least 13 years of age, and receive approval from me. NYLT is a tremendous opportunity. Additional information is available in the attached flyer and at https://www.ncacbsa.org/national-youth-leadership-training/.

7. HANDBOOK RANK REQUIREMENTS. Scouts, when you complete a rank requirement, please have the youth or adult leader initial and date the completion in your Scouts BSA Handbook (even if the requirement is also marked as completed in Scoutbook).

8. COPY ADULT WITH EMAIL. Scouts, when you email an adult, please remember to copy a parent or other trusted adult.

Everyone, I’m sorry we had to postpone the shooting campout. But, considering the weather on Saturday, it was a good decision.

Working together, each patrol will determine its answers. Points will be awarded for correct answers. Ideally, the topic will be announced before the meeting. As the patrol competitions develop, their format may evolve.

3. LEADERSHIP MOMENTS. Beginning with the March 15 meeting, and under the guidance of assistant scoutmaster Potter, the program patrol will select a patrol member to share a “leadership moment” before the scoutmaster minute at each troop meeting. During the leadership moment, the scout will briefly share a leadership example the scout observed at school, work, scouts, home, or otherwise during the preceding week. As the leadership moments develop, their format may evolve.

4. WORLD RELIGION SPEAKERS. As noted previously, individuals from four different world religions will address their religion’s history, traditions, and beliefs during four troop meetings. The tentative schedule is: April 19 – Hinduism, April 26 – Judaism, May 10 – Christianity, and May 24 – Islam. These presentations are intended to be informative and educational. They are not intended to be attempts at conversion or recruitment.

This year, we’ll have a “beginner scout skills” program for newer scouts, and an “advanced scout skills” program for older scouts. Registration and other information will be provided later.

7. APRIL 26 – ASM MEETING. The ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTERS will meet on Tuesday, April 26, at 6:00 pm at PVUMC. We’ll discuss various matters regarding the troop.

8. APRIL 26 – TROOP ELECTIONS. The troop elections are scheduled for Tuesday, April 26. Scouts will elect a senior patrol leader, and scouts in each patrol will elect a patrol leader. IMPORTANTLY, unless I provides otherwise: (1) if a patrol member other than the INCUMBENT patrol leader wants to run for patrol leader and needs to serve in a position of responsibility to satisfy a rank requirement, then the INCUMBENT patrol leader may NOT run for re-election and (2) a patrol leader may NOT serve in another position of responsibility. If a scout wants to run for senior patrol leader, then please inform me by Monday, April 25. After the elections, the new senior patrol leader will appoint assistant senior patrol leaders and other troop-wide youth leaders, and the new patrol leaders will appoint assistant patrol leaders.

9. MAY 6-8 – RESCHEDULED SHOOTING CAMPOUT. As noted in the March 17 emails from Mr. Annavaram, the shooting campout has been RESCHEDULED for May 6 – 8. UNLESS you INFORM Mr. Annavaram OTHERWISE, we’ll assume that anyone who registered for the postponed campout will attend the rescheduled campout. If you didn’t register for the postponed campout, but want to register for the rescheduled campout, them please register at https://forms.gle/1RBn3yZ8mDuFcncz8.

10. MAY 17 – SWIM CHECK. We’ll have our annual swim check on Tuesday, May 17. We’ll MEET at Dulles South Recreation and Community Center (24950 Riding Center Drive, South Riding, Virginia) – NOT at PVUMC. We’ll meet at 7:45 pm – NOT at 7:00 pm. We hope to complete the swim check between 9:00 and 9:15 pm. After a scout completes his or her swim check, the scout may leave. Based upon a scout’s swim check, he or she will be CLASSIFIED as a swimmer, beginner, or non-swimmer. The classification CRITERIA is below. Scouts are encouraged to PRACTICE before the swim check.

A scout’s swim classification may impact the AQUATIC activities the scout engages in at summer CAMP. If a scout is unable to attend the swim check, but will attend summer camp, then the scout may complete a swim check at summer camp.

As emphasized previously, any individual (youth or adult) attending Sea Base 2022 MUST be classified as a SWIMMER. If an individual attending Sea Base 2022 is UNABLE to attend the swim check, then the individual MUST complete a BSA approved swim check on their own.

SWIMMER – Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: side stroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

BEGINNER – Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before and return to starting place.

NON-SWIMMER – Chooses not to take the swim test or cannot pass the beginner test.

3. SWIM CHECK LIFEGUARD NEEDED. As noted below, our annual swim check is scheduled for May 17 at Dulles South Recreation and Community Center. CRITICALLY, however, we’ve encountered a problem finding a certified instructor to conduct the swim check. If you know a certified LIFEGUARD who would like to be PAID to conduct the swim check, then please inform me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. The individual must be CERTIFIED as a BSA aquatics instructor, BSA lifeguard counsellor, BSA lifeguard, Red Cross lifeguard, or water safety instructor. The certification must be current and valid, and we’ll need a copy of the certification. Depending upon the AVAILABILITY of a certified instructor, we may need to REVISE the swim check date, time, and/or location.

4. TROOP 682G. On April 1 (no “fooling”), Scouts BSA troop 682G (girls) officially began. Congratulations to troop 682G! We look forward to working with you. 4. PERSONAL FITNESS MERIT BADGE. The personal fitness merit badge is required for the Eagle rank. The MB requires physical and dental examinations, and includes a 12-week fitness program. 2. APRIL 26 – TROOP ELECTIONS. As noted above, the troop elections are Tuesday. At this time, ANDREW Koch, WILL Rowzie, and RITWIK Kaki are running for SENIOR PATROL LEADER. If any other scout wants to run for SPL, then he must INFORM me by Monday. Unless I provide otherwise: (1) if a patrol member other than the INCUMBENT patrol leader wants to run for patrol leader and needs to serve in a position of responsibility to satisfy a rank requirement, then the INCUMBENT patrol leader may NOT run for re-election and (2) a patrol leader may NOT serve in another position of responsibility. After the elections, the new SPL will appoint assistant senior patrol leaders and other troop-wide youth leaders, and the new patrol leaders will appoint assistant patrol leaders.

3. APRIL 26 – ASM MEETING. The ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTERS will meet on Tuesday (April 26) at 6:00 pm at PVUMC. We’ll discuss various matters regarding the troop.

4. MAY 6 REGISTRATION DEADLINE – HORSEMANSHIP CAMPOUT. Our horsemanship campout is June 17-19. During it, we’ll work on the horsemanship merit badge. As noted previously, the DEADLINE to REGISTER for the campout is MAY 6. The early registration deadline is based upon the deadline for submitting our final number of riders. 5. MAY 6-8 – RESCHEDULED SHOOTING CAMPOUT. As noted previously, the shooting campout was RESCHEDULED for May 6 – 8. UNLESS you INFORM Mr. Annavaram OTHERWISE, we’ll assume that anyone who registered for the postponed campout will attend the rescheduled campout. 6. MAY 17 – SWIM CHECK. We’ll have our annual swim check on Tuesday, May 17, at PROPEL SWIM ACADEMY (43160 Amberwood Plaza, South Riding) – not at Dulles South Recreation and Community Center. We’ll begin at 7:30 pm. Please MEET at Propel (not PVUMC) at 7:30. We hope to complete the swim check between 8:30 and 9:00 pm. After a scout completes his or her swim check, the scout may leave. Based upon a scout’s swim check, he or she will be CLASSIFIED as a swimmer, beginner, or non-swimmer. If a scout is unable to attend the swim check, but will attend summer camp, then the scout may complete a swim check at summer camp. As emphasized previously, any youth or adult attending SEA BASE 2022 MUST be classified as a SWIMMER. If an individual attending Sea Base 2022 is UNABLE to attend the swim check, then the individual MUST complete a BSA approved swim check on their own.

7. MAY 20-22 – LAKE ANNA CAMPOUT. We’ll have our annual Lake Anna campout May 20-22 at Christopher Run Campground (Mineral, Virginia). Among other things, we’ll boat, tube, fish, and swim. Registration and additional information will be sent later.

8. JULY 10 – 16 SUMMER CAMP. As noted previously, we’ll attend Camp Marriott at Goshen Scout Reservation July 10 – 16. Scout summer camp is a great opportunity to earn merit badges, fellowship with other scouts, and enjoy various activities. Among other things, Camp Marriott has an extensive aquatics program including sailing, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, and the water sports merit badge. Camp Marriott also offers the New Scout Quest program for scouts who recently crossed over from Cub Scouts, or recently joined scouting. NSQ participants earn a variety of rank advancement requirements and have opportunities to pursue up to three merit badges. 10. PERSONAL FITNESS MERIT BADGE. The personal fitness merit badge is required for the Eagle rank. The MB requires physical and dental examinations, and includes a 12-week fitness program. Among other things, trip leaders promote the trip, ensure the adult patrol selects a grubmaster and plans a menu, ensures each campout patrol selects a grubmaster and plans a menu, leads and coordinates activities during the trip, and ensures someone can tow the equipment trailer. Most immediately, we need trip leaders for the Lake Anna campout (May 20 – 22) and the horsemanship campout (June 17 – 19).

6. MAY 2 PLC MEETING. The (new) patrol leaders council will meet virtually tomorrow (Monday, May 2), at 7:00 pm. 3. MAY 14 EQUIPMENT DAY (MORNING). We apologize for the short notice, but, because of the abbreviated shooting campout and other considerations, we’ll have an equipment day (morning) on Saturday (May 14) from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at PVUMC. The event is MANDATORY for ALL youth leaders (including assistant patrol leaders), unless a scout has an absence EXCUSED before the event. Excused absences can relate to schedule conflicts, being out of town, or illness. Adult leaders are strongly ENCOURAGED to attend.

Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: side stroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

BEGINNER – Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before and return to starting place.

NON-SWIMMER – Chooses not to take the swim test or cannot pass the beginner test.

The steps for a parent to add a youth email address (I think) are: (1) log into Scoutbook, (2) click “My Dashboard,” (3) click the scout’s name under “My Family,” (4) click “Edit Profile,” (5) click “Invite [the scout’s name] to Connect” at bottom of screen, (6) enter the scout’s email address, and (7) have the scout enter his or her email account, “accept” your invitation to connect, and select a password.

As the SERVICE patrol, the PANDA patrol will set up before, and clean up after, the court of honor. PANDA patrol members should ARRIVE by 6:45 pm.

2. CLASS B T-SHIRTS. Mr. Yallapragada will have troop 682 class B t-shirts at the court of honor. If you are a new scout and paid the joining fee, then your t-shirt is paid for and you may pick it up. Additional youth and adult t-shirts are available for sale. 2. JULY 1 – CITIZENSHIP IN SOCIETY REQUIRED FOR EAGLE. As explained previously, beginning July 1, 2022, the Citizenship in Society merit badge is required to earn Eagle Scout rank. We’re trying to learn more about the CiS merit badge counselor requirements and available CiS MBCs. In general, and in addition to the usual MBC requirements, a CiS MBC must demonstration certain qualifications, complete the BSA DEI training, and complete National Capital Area Council developed training. 3. AUGUST 26-28 POWDER HORN. Powder Horn is a 3-day course designed to introduce adult and youth scouting leaders to high-adventure program possibilities for their unit, and to provide ideas, contacts, and resources to implement an exciting and robust program. The National Capital Area Council is holding Powder Horn August 26 – 28 at Camp St. Charles (Newberg, Maryland). One troop 682 scout is registered to attend. While space is limited, two additional spaces are open. To be eligible, a troop 682 youth must be 14 and have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops. We enjoyed Camp Marriott (Goshen Scout Reservation) last week. In total, 59 troop 682 individuals attended camp – 43 troop 682B youth, 10 troop 682B adults, 3 troop 682G youth, and 3 troop 682G adults. Among other things, the weather was incredible.

Importantly, thank you to assistant scoutmaster Tom Scott. He worked extensively preparing the troop for, and assisting the troop with, camp.

And, thank you to the adults who attended camp, transported scouts to and from camp, and assisted during camp.

And, thank you to Ritwik Kaki who served as camp senior patrol leader. He did a great job.

Lastly, thank you to the other youth leaders. They did a great job.

1. JULY 19 TROOP MEETING – WATER WARS. We’ll meet on Tuesday (July 19) from 7:00 – 8:30 pm at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church (43987 John Mosby Highway, Chantilly, Virginia). Because of damage to the PVUMC fellowship hall during the recent storm, we’ll meet OUTSIDE. Please apply or bring BUG stray, and please bring drinking WATER.

During the meeting, we’ll:

– Discuss summer CAMP, share “ROSES” from summer camp, and distribute camp PATCHES to youth and adults who haven’t received them;
– Pick up limbs and debris in the PVUMC field;
– Engage in “WATER WARS;” and
– Enjoy a COLD TREAT.

In addition, youth and adults attending SEA BASE next week will MEET, discuss the trip, and distribute SEA BASE t-shirts.

Scouts, IMPORTANTLY, because of WATER WARS, please wear your SWIMSUIT, bring water spraying instruments, and bring a TOWEL.

2. AUGUST 5 – 7 ANNUAL PLANNING RETREAT. As a reminder, the patrol leaders council annual planning retreat is Friday – Sunday, August 5 – 7 at Lake Anna, Virginia. As noted in a recent email to youth leaders, unless Mr. Whiteley or I approve an absence in advance, attendance is MANDATORY for the senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leaders, patrol leaders, scribe, and troop guides. If a patrol leader is unable to attend, then the assistant patrol leader should attend. Attendance is ENCOURAGED for the outdoor ethics guide, OA representative, webmaster, quartermaster, historian, chaplain aid, and librarian.

We’ll stay at a Lake Anna house. Scouts will plan and prepare the meals. To pay for food and supplies, the COST is $35. We’ll PLAN the 2022-2023 calendar, but we’ll ALSO boat, ski, tube, swim, fish, etc.

Among other things, scouts should BRING a sleeping bag, sleeping pad, bath towel, swim towel, swimsuit, sunscreen, hat, and insect repellant.

If you haven’t already, please INFORM me whether a youth leader will attend or not attend.

3. JULY 1 – CITIZENSHIP IN SOCIETY REQUIRED FOR EAGLE. As a reminder and as explained previously, beginning July 1, 2022, the Citizenship in Society merit badge is required to earn Eagle Scout rank.

4. AUGUST 26-28 POWDER HORN. Powder Horn is a 3-day course designed to introduce adult and youth scouting leaders to high-adventure program possibilities for their unit, and to provide ideas, contacts, and resources to implement an exciting and robust program. As noted previously, the National Capital Area Council is holding Powder Horn August 26 – 28 at Camp St. Charles (Newberg, Maryland). One troop 682 scout is registered to attend. While space is limited, two additional spaces are open. To be eligible, a troop 682 youth must be 14 and have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops. A troop 682 adult must be a registered leader and fully trained for his or her position. If you are interested in attending Powder Horn, then please inform me (tyrus.thompson@nreca.coop).

5. ADVANCE NOTICE OF REGISTRATION CANCELLATIONS. As noted previously, in recent months, a number of scouts have registered for a campout or other event, but CANCELLED (not attended) without advance NOTICE (before the event begins). These cancellations without advance notice provide significant LOGISTICAL and FINANCIAL challenges. If you register for an event and cannot attend, then please INFORM Mr. Annavaram (ninadreddy@gmail.com), Mr. Gaull (jeffgaull@hotmail.com), or me (tyrus.thompson@nreca.coop) as soon as possible.

2. PLC MEETINGS – APRIL 10 AND 17. As a reminder, the patrol leaders council will meet IN PERSON tomorrow (Monday, April 10) and Monday, April 17, in the PVUMC fellowship hall. The meetings will begin at 7:00 pm.

3. NEW SCOUT PARENTS MEETING – APRIL 11. Parents of Arrow of Light scouts crossing over to troop 682 are invited to a meeting during the April 11 troop meeting. We’ll provide information and answer questions regarding troop 682.

4. 2022 JOURNEY TO EXCELLENCE – APRIL 11. Journey to Excellence is the Boy Scouts of America program to assist units plan, monitor, and evaluate their performance. There are specific criteria to plan and accomplish. Each year, the unit is evaluated and scored. Based upon its score, the unit is rated bronze (effective), silver (excellent), or gold (exceptional). For 2022, troop 682 received a gold rating. Beginning with the April 11 troop meeting, Assistant Scoutmaster Carl Marin will distribute Gold 2022 JTE patches to all scouts. The most recently earned JTE patch may be worn below the patrol emblem on the right uniform sleeve.

5. PVUMC SERVICE DAY – APRIL 15. As a reminder, we’ll have a SERVICE day at PVUMC on Saturday (April 15). We’ll begin at 9:00 am and provide lunch. This is a great opportunity to show our appreciation to PVUMC (and perform service hours).

7. CLASS B T-SHIRTS – APRIL 18. As a reminder, Mr. Uday Yallapragada will have troop 682 class B T-SHIRTS at the April 18 troop meeting. If you (particularly new scouts) need a class B t-shirt, then please speak with Mr. Yallapragada.

8. SPRING ELECTIONS – APRIL 25. As a reminder, during the April 25 troop meeting, the troop will elect a senior patrol leader and each patrol will elect a patrol leader. If you want to run for SPL, then please email me.

9. NEW SCOUT SKILLS CAMPOUT – APRIL 28-30. Our annual new scout skills campout is April 28-30 at the Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area (Strasburg, Virginia). We’ll focus on teaching (and relearning) basic camping and scouting skills. The troop provides tents and cooking equipment. Each scout provides his or her own personal gear (sleeping bag and pad, clothes, flashlight, etc.). A packing list will be provided before the campout. For OLDER scouts, the campout is a great opportunity to teach YOUNGER scouts, and to work on your own RANK and MERIT BADGE requirements.

12. ADULT TRAINED LEADERS. As a reminder, adult leaders, if you haven’t already, please complete position-specific training. “Trained leadership” was one of our lowest scores on the 2022 JTE scorecard. 3. CLASS B T-SHIRTS – APRIL 18. As a reminder, Mr. Uday Yallapragada will have troop 682 class B T-SHIRTS at the April 18 troop meeting. If you (particularly new scouts) need a class B t-shirt, then please speak with Mr. Yallapragada.

4. SPRING ELECTIONS – APRIL 25. As a reminder, during the April 25 troop meeting, each troop will elect a senior patrol leader and each patrol will elect a patrol leader. If you want to run for SPL, then please email me.

5. NEW SCOUT SKILLS CAMPOUT – APRIL 28-30. As a reminder, the new scout skills campout is April 28-30 at the Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area (Strasburg, Virginia). Registration and additional information is available at https://forms.gle/zqE8ukxoxBnjfQBm6.

6. PACK 910 CAMPFIRE – APRIL 28. Cub Scout Pack 910 will have a CAMPFIRE meeting on Friday evening, April 28, at PVUMC. If any TROOP 682 scouts are available, then please VOLUNTEER to assist with games and other activities at the campfire. Please inform Assistant Scoutmaster Rich Kay (richardkayt682@gmail.com) if you can assist. Unless a PLC member is attending the new scout skills campout or is otherwise excused by Mr. Whiteley or me, he or she must assist with the campfire.

7. EAGLE COURT OF HONOR – MAY 6. As you may know, James Haddock earned EAGLE. Congratulations, James! His Eagle COURT OF HONOR is Saturday, May 6, at 3:00 pm, at PVUMC. Everyone is invited to attend. 8. CITIZENSHIP IN SOCIETY MERIT BADGE. Committee Member Andres Lorca will lead another citizenship in society merit badge class during the MAY troop meetings. Participation is LIMITED. If you want to participate, then please contact Mr. Lorca (alorca69@gmail.com).

9. 2022 JOURNEY TO EXCELLENCE. As a reminder, for 2022, troop 682 received a gold Journey to Excellence rating. To receive your 2022 JTE patch, please see Assistant Scoutmaster Carl Marin. The patch may be worn below the patrol emblem on the right uniform sleeve.

10. WILDERNESS FIRST AID – MAY 20-21. The National Capital Area Council is offering Wilderness First Aid training at Camp Snyder May 20 – 21. If you need WFA training for a high adventure camp or otherwise, then this is a great opportunity.
